Growing Instructions:

  • Tomatoes like to be planted deep into the rich soil for best results.
  • Full sun and regular watering.
  • A calcium based fertilizer is best along with regular crop rotation.
  • Rushing the season by planting too early will slow the plant and delay the fruit.
  • Plant fairly deep. I like to pick taller plants and plant deeper. Roots will develop on the buried stem.
  • Tomatoes can be staked, caged or just left to grow on the ground. This is personal preference and a space consideration. You get more tomatoes from a caged or ground grown tomato plant but a stakes and pruned plant takes much less space.
  • There are an endless number of varieties to choose from.
  • Early ones give you fruit first but give up size and flavour compared to regular season varities.
  • There are full size table slicing varieties, long thinner thick paste types for canning and cooking, there are cherry types that grow about the size of grapes, there are a number of compact varieties for tight spaces or container gardens.
  • There are normal red varieties but also yellow and pink varieties that are low acid, and also varieties that are purple, striped, and orange.
  • It is always fun to grow the heirloom varieties. Some say they taste better than the newer varieties. I always loved eating tomatoes and have since my grandfather grew those old varieties years ago. There are great tasting ones from then and great tasting ones now and some from then and now that don't taste as good.
  • When growing heirlooms remember most take a lot longer than newer varieties to mature and produce less fruit. The older varieties have less tolerance to fungal diseases and are more likely to suffer from late blight.
  • I grow some of each and try new ones every year.
  • Since the blight problem of a few years ago and because more heirloom varieties are being grown I put a preventative fungicide spray on all my tomatoes. There are a number of very safe non toxic fungicides available at your garden centre. Remember once you see the problem your ability to control it is just about impossible. Read the label carefully just because a chemical is organic does not mean it is non toxic.
